do you think that in the history of the world there have been more instances of original "good ideas" or more instance of other peoples good ideas being passed off as belonging to the person repeating the idea? an example would be Kati's hey zeus idea for a dog name, then i take that idea tell it to my friends and say i thought of it. my thought is that it is in fact the latter. hopefully after reading this you're not overly offended at how i've wasted precious seconds or, depending on the speed of your reading, minute(s) of your life. on the plus side you're this much closer to the end of your probation here on this earth, and therefore closer to a life of happiness and luxury. unless of course you have sinned recently and not repented before reading this, in the which case i would definitely do that, as the time to the end of your probation is almost certainly closer now than it ever was, unless of course this message has somehow sunk deep into your souls revitalizing your internal organs(not outside the range of possibility) causing you to live a full year or two longer, depending on how far into said probation you currently are at this present time. luckily my explanation of the apology was twice as long as the thing i apologized for but im not apologizing for this one. if you have continued to read when long ago it was more than clear that there would be nothing further of substance, then it is through no fault of mine and when you look to find who is the cause of this great wickedness you need only stand, walk a short distance and stare at the culprit in the mirror. that is all.

Happy New Year everyone. It was fun to talk to the family on New Years Eve. We wish that we could have actually talked to people for a little while to get to know what is going on. We will have to talk more often when the connection is good and you have the time to visit. Christy, it was great to talk and find out about what is going on in your life. Jeff and Kristen you guys really need to download Skype so that we can call you. It is free and it would be fun to see you guys. The same goes for Doug and Tonia. The rest we can catch you at mom's unless you would like to talk to us more than once or twice. Skype is not hard to get on your computer just do it and add Joe or me as a friend. Just letting everyone know that the Johnson family has moved back to the Atwood nest. We didn't want the ward to be too long without one of us here. We packed the day after Christmas and still have a big mess. The week has been busy and yet... not. Moving takes a lot longer than we planned and I am ready to be done! Bronco On Riley Nelson’s Injury:

I asked Mendenhall if he found it interesting or ironic that his running QB was hurt while throwing the football: "It's not that he was just throwing it, he was standing in until the very last second with a guy bearing in on him. He sees him bearing in on him, and he stands and throws it anyway, and throws a touchdown." [with the wind blowing in with hurricane-type force and grains of sand in his eyes]

"What's more ironic is that wasn't the play he was hurt on...he had been playing already with (the injury)."

Mendenhall noted that after the injury, "because (Nelson's) pain threshold and his tolerance is so high, trying to get an idea of how hurt he was" became a challenge. "Because he doesn't act hurt."

"… I love his aggressiveness, and I love that mindset, and some of the plays he makes, probably are balls that wouldn’t have been thrown [by other QBs], and then we catch them, then it is a great play and everything’s good." [So, he throws poor passes but if receivers can adjust then all is well in Zion]

The coach even said he liked how Nelson high-fived an official who was signaling that Nelson’s two-point conversion attempt was good. "Loved it. Loved it," he said. "When you [hear] the idea of being in the moment, that’s pretty much it. … I would like that to kind of be a symbol of BYU football. …. You are having so much fun that you try to find someone to celebrate with." [even though losing the game]

Now, no one is arguing the spark Nelson provided and that the offense was stale under Heaps, but BYU would have won those other games he started with our mother as their starting quarterback. The TCU game was supposed to be the barometer – could he throw against a decent defense? But I guess he can – except for those few decisions that need to be made at a higher level. I am glad we cleared that up.

My point is, are we relegated to another year of Riley? Beating the teams that are horrible but losing to any team that has a winning record? (Click here for the article) Is this the future of BYU football? Is this the best quarterback we can really find or that is on the roster?

And if Riley is the epitome of translated Celestial beings living here on earth among us- as is often mentioned as the reason Bronco loves him so much, why does he have to apologize for letting his hair grow beyond BYU honor code standards? I know, that is nit picking, but I am starved for good BYU conversation and objective analysis up here if you can’t tell.

I created a Google calendar today. It will be a good way to remember little things--like birthdays--that we typically don't. Mom can use it to help give us reminders about other things like parties, marriages, etc, and anyone can add and change things. the way this will work, however, is if everyone has a gmail account and uses google calendar. I signed everyone up for a gmail account when we started the blog, but I'm not sure who uses it or not. If you didn't get an e-mail from me about the calendar, then I don't have your gmail contact information. Please give it to me. My email is simply joebuckatwood@gmail.com. send me your info. Top it off with butter (yes, he put butter on it) and powdered sugar - with a small amount of jam. Please, add this to your list of meals to eat at 10:00 pm. It is delicious and nutritious. so a guy from kenya set a new record for marathons at the berlin marathon. how would you feel if you could run 26.2 miles in that time. i broke it down for you, and thats an average mile time of 4:42 minutes per mile. so whos up for setting a new world record. we could also try biggest wad of used bubblegum the current record is roughly the size of a softball... we're gonna need joe buck for this one.

Gameday Observations

Kyle Van Noy gets beat occasionally when he takes a chance, but is still fantastic and has great closing speed.

Unlike last week, we got some fortunate ball bounces that allowed us to win the game.

Travis Uale still doesn't know what "deep as the deepest man" and "proper angle" mean.

Defense bailed out the offense but gave up way too many yards.

Heap's strength is supposed to be accuracy but I haven't seen it yet.

We'd better improve our play or Utah State will likely beat us.

In the end though, I'll take a win.

For the record, Kristen's parents say absolutely no TV before the age of 2 and very limited TV after that until school begins. This makes it tough because TV is such an excellent babysitter!

Did anyone else think this described BYU's play calling against Texas? How often did Texas change up their play calling until they found out what worked? Why did BYU not continue to throw to its receivers and tight ends in the second half? how many times do you run a designed pass play to your running back that loses yards? How many red zone attempts does it take to make a touchdown?
These were just some of the questions I had after the game. Maybe BYU should call up Anae and see if he wants his old job back.

What do we know about the purported statement of Joseph Smith that the Constitution would hang by a thread and that the elders would save it?

D. Michael Stewart, Brigham Young University, Department of History The documents show that Joseph Smith did prophesy a number of times that the United States and the Constitution would be imperiled and that the elders would have a hand in saving them. The first known record of the prophecy dates to July 19, 1840, in Nauvoo, when the prophet spoke about the redemption of Zion. Using Doctrine & Covenants 101 as a text, he said, “Even this nation will be on the verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground and when the Constitution is on the brink of ruin this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction.” (Joseph Smith Papers, LDS Church Historical Archives, Box 1, March 10, 1844.)

There are also other documents in Church History files that show that five different early Saints recorded some remarks by the Prophet Joseph Smith on this same prophecy, perhaps voiced by the Prophet a number of times in a number of ways after 1840. Parley P. Pratt wrote in 1841 that the prophet said, “The government is fallen and needs redeeming. It is guilty of Blood and cannot stand as it now is but will come so near desolation as to hang as it were by a single hair!!!!! Then the servants goes [sic] to the nations of the earth, and gathers the strength of the Lord’s house! A mighty army!!!!!! And this is the redemption of Zion when the saints shall have redeemed that government and reinstated it in all its purity and glory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” (George A. Smith Papers, Church Archives, Box 7, Folder 5, January 21, 1841.)

James Burgess related that the Prophet, while addressing the Nauvoo Legion several miles east of Nauvoo in May 1843, said that “the time would come when the constitution and government would hang by a brittle thread and would be ready to fall into other hands but this people the latter-day saints will step forth and save it.” (James Burgess Journal, 1818–1904, Church Archives, vol. 1—found among loose sermons.)

Orson Hyde recalled that the Prophet predicted that “the time would come that the Constitution and the country would be in danger of an overthrow and said he, if the constitution be saved at all, it will be by the Elders of this Church. I believe this is about the language as nearly as I can recollect it.” (JD, 6:150.)

In a Pioneer Day celebration in Ogden in 1871, Eliza R. Snow said, “I heard the prophet say, ‘The time will come when the government of these United States will be so nearly overthrown through its corruption, that the Constitution will hang as it were by a single hair, and the Latter-day Saints—the Elders of Israel—will step forward to its rescue and save it.” (Journal History, MSF 143 #28, July 24, 1871.)

Jedediah M. Grant, during the dark days of threatened invasion of Utah by a federal army, referred to the Prophet’s utterance as he addressed a Mormon Battalion gathering in Salt Lake City, February 6, 1855.

“What did the Prophet Joseph say? When the Constitution shall be tottering we shall be the people to save it from the hand of the foe.” (Deseret News Weekly, January 19, 1870.)

On various occasions, Joseph Smith referred to the Constitution, the country, and destiny of the nation; and there is clear evidence that he anticipated future peril. Furthermore, he pronounced the prophecy at various times and places. Perhaps he himself interchanged the simile “on the brink of ruin,” “hang by a brittle thread,” “hang by a single hair,” etc., to describe the anticipated crisis. It is also clear that the redeemers or rescuers of the Constitution were to be either the Saints generally or priesthood officers specifically.

Since no particular time was given for fulfilling this prophecy, members of the Church have often wondered about its timing. The prophecy clearly indicates a single, identifiable episode yet to come. However, it is helpful for us to constantly be on guard against threats to the central elements of the Constitution. It is not wise to sit by and think that the protection of the Constitution is the problem of someone else at some other time.

In support of this view of “constant vigilance,” it is most instructive to note that Church leaders have seen the Constitution imperiled a number of times. Brigham Young, reflecting on the prophecy of 1868, expressed: “It would not be many years before these words come to pass.” (JD, 12:204.) President John Taylor in 1884 declared: “It may be nearer … than some of us think.” (JD, 25:350.) President J. Reuben Clark, Jr., warned in 1942: “Whether it [the Constitution] shall live or die is now in the balance.” (Conference Report, October 1942, p. 58.)

Students of history and the Constitution know that the Constitution has been imperiled a number of times in its history and has been saved a number of times both by vigorous political action and by vocal public opinion.

Thus, rather than simply wait for the one time when the Constitution shall hang by a thread, Latter-day Saints must continually be vigilant. Our commission to save the Constitution is, like salvation, a continuing task, and Church leaders have pointed out the tools available: analysis of constitutional principles, personal study of the history of our nation, reading the Constitution to children at home and in schools, teaching them self-sacrifice—the principle that makes freedom possible—teaching them their obligations as mature citizens, recognizing and resisting ideologies that threaten constitutional principles, and developing loyalty to principle rather than to men or parties.

Politicians and statesmen must grapple with tough questions, painstakingly familiarize themselves with vital issues, and be decisive; but finally, an antidote to abusive government, to corruption, and to constitutional peril lies in private character. Humble people in prayerful homes will contribute immeasurably to a lasting constitutional government. And it should be apparent that consistent efforts in these areas will prepare us both to continually protect the Constitution and to prepare us for possibly a yet future rendezvous with our Constitution’s destiny.

Why do reporters continue to use Carolyn Jessop as a source? Don't we get all razzed when they use ex-lds haters as sources against the LDS church? I have no problem with the topic of the news articles, but they can at least give credential evidence and/or testimony instead of picking the loudest most hate filled people out there.

Is it that the FLDS have no spokesmen to speak of? Or lazy, scummy reporting? I'm fully able to believe there are a few men completely off their rockers in the community. However, let's not disregard the misguided women and children and shove them to the side and trample THEIR rights because of the messed up souls of a few disgusting men.

Fantasy Trip NW USA

So, Joe Buck has started working this week - that leaves me with lots and lots of time. So, I have taken to planning fantasy trips. Ever since we returned from Bryce I have been all excited about all of the National Parks I have never been to. So - here is my trip to Glacier National Park -

This is a 2 1/2 week trip - I know the drive home is a big one, so I was thinking about breaking it up. I was wondering if Doug and Tonia knew of anything fun to do between Boise and Tilamook (Yes, the cheese factory).

As you can see, we go through Idaho Falls AND Boise. Everyone is invited on this fantasy trip - the date is undetermined. I'm guessing somewhere around 2030.

Stay tuned for the Yosemite/San Francisco trip!

FYI - Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are an entirely different trip - just so you are aware that is the reason why they are not in this itinerary.
