In light of the recent decision by the NCAA (a private institution) to punish Penn State (a public university) and force them to, among other things, pay $60 million to charity, I thought this article on the NCAA's founding was enlightening. It is a researched law paper that is 87 pages long - don't worry, 2/3 of that is footnotes. However, if you have 20 minutes, this is a great example of how small organizations can gain control in interesting ways.
